Case study 1 for the Google UX Design Certificate

In the summer of 2023, I began the Google UX Design Certificate with no prior experience in UX design. Because of this inexperience, I made some novice mistakes, which led to me redoing my initial research and halting progress before the design phase.

While I didn’t finish the end-to-end design process like I had initially set out to complete, I did conduct two rounds of mixed-methods research, synthesized my findings, and learned to let go of my self-imposed expectations. The experience also led me to starting my graduate studies at UW, so I’d still consider it a win.

The short version

Problem

I used Sharpen to generate a random prompt. I cycled through over 30 options before landing on "Design a scheduling app for fitness trainers”. This was due to my personal interest in fitness and the amount of group fitness instructors and clients in my personal network.

Solution

I surveyed 15 group fitness trainers and clients and conducted semi-structured interviews with 6 additional group fitness clients. This led to insights around metrics, instructor and class timing preferences, scheduling/rescheduling, and cancellation.

Impact

The biggest lessons learned from this project was not about the fitness booking experience, but rather letting go of expectations and learning firsthand the value of research within the design process.
